As one who, having been introduced to "Back to Godhead" magazines and the "Bhagavad-Gita" song of Krsna, in Sydney during the 1970s, I had begun to associate with the devotees I met on the streets. Years later in the '80s I started going to Healthy Wealthy and Wise in Cairns. Due to the mercy and instruction I received from my devotee associates that I was fortunate enough to associate with some very elevated souls. I've been amazed at the mercy of such sadhus.

Despite being a borderline bloop, ("Whaddyamean borderline?!?!!", some would say), I have had the opportunity to sit at the lotus feet of a number of beautiful souls, two of whom have been the most enlivening experience; they have completely altered my direction from here on.

Ironically, Maya is my friend. She drags me from degradation to degradation. She shows me the choices I've made. I have little choice other than to assume a humble stance as the kicks, kicks and more karmic kicks arrive, the result of my previous choices.

Sadhu shows us krsna

S eeing that I have no love myself, but having been exposed to the loving beauty that radiates from the generous hearts of my two gurudevas, I am so very impressed, rocked to the core. Despite my useless attachments and penchant for self indulgence, I wholeheartedly attempt to dedicate myself to that love. I can see no other positive purpose for existence.

Without my gurudevas, my very existence is a shadow without substance, a useless waste of time. Better that I dedicate myself to that purity of purpose as demonstrated to me by the sadhus, than to enjoy countless lives in any heavenly abode. The gopis, by offering Their footdust (when requested) as medicine to krsna with no regard for their own welfare, have taught us that to serve in hell is better than to enjoy in heaven, all else pales exponentially by comparison.

My life in a nutshell

Such has my life been that I have wasted almost all of it indulging myself in what I thought was harmless trivia, a kind of keeping comfortable till the arrival of death, as it were. But now, becoming a little aware of the magnificence and munificence of my Lordships as portrayed by my gurudevas, alas, I realise that I have offensively wasted countless lives in the pursuit of nothing more than phantasmagoria, the mirage of happiness which somehow never arrives.

Mercy is so unbelievably sweet.

Only by the mercy of my Srila Gurudeva am I even somewhat capable of hearing such topics, reading about, singing about, contemplating something so elevated as spiritual life. It is obvious that my impression of spiritual life is so remote from the actual reality, but that mere remote impression is astounding; how glorious then are the jewels of emotion that swell to form that prema-bhakti at her very pinnacle? It is far beyond bewilderment for me to even attempt such a consideration.

Therefore I worship my Srila Gurudevas, their Srila Gurudevas, the entire guru varga, by whom this precious ambrosia of divine love is so tenderly passed down via the gentle hands of one kind hearted soul to the next kind hearted soul to the next to the next. This ocean of exquisite sweetness that exists, flowing between the hearts of the vaisnavas and their Lordships, is the only purpose to our lives.

So, who am I?

It doesn't matter in the slightest who I am, it's who you are that matters.

Whoever you are, strengthen your resolve and your efforts, waste not a mere moment, find that sublimely delicious prema-bhakti and when you do, please share a drop with me.

Quotes

Sastra says, regarding sadhus:

  • krti-sadhya bhavet sadhya-
     bhava sa sadhanabhidha
    nitya-siddhasya bhavasya
     prakatyam hrdi sadhyata

  • "Sadhana-bhakti is the engagement of the mind and senses in the limbs of bhakti for the purpose of attaining bhava-bhakti. This bhava is a potentiality which exists eternally in the heart of the jiva and is manifested in the heart purified by sadhana (through the mercy of a nitya-siddha, a living sad-guru)."

  • Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.2.2)
